The amount of debt required to be written-off by Scottish Borders Council fell in the last financial year, councillors will be informed next week.

A report to the council’s Executive Committee reveals that the authority wrote-off £434k in debts in 2025/26.

That compares to £488k for the previous financial year.

The debt covers areas such as Council Tax, non-domestic rates, sundry debtors, Housing Benefit overpayments and aged debt from the balance sheet.

The write-off were agreed only after the amounts were considered unrecoverable.

The highest debt written off was for Council Tax at £295k.

A report states: “In all cases, a debt will only be written off when legislation prevents its recovery, it is uneconomic to pursue or the debtor becomes insolvent and when all options of recovery have been exhausted, which includes the use of the council’s legal team and the Sheriff officers, Walker Love.”
