Vacant land next to Haddington Care Home is now at centre of housing bid

A piece of land which lay empty for more than a century could be turned into a family home under new plans.
The vacant site at Mill Wynd in Haddington, is next to historic Tynebank House and Haddington Care Home and is listed in East Lothian Local Development Plan as open space.
Over the years it has been used for tennis, a car park and storage area linked to the former distillery which was based on neighbouring land which was demolished to make way for the care home a decade ago.
However plans have now been lodged with planners for a four bedroom house on the land which was recently sold on the private market.
In its design statement agents says the new home has been designed after pre application consultations with East Lothian Council and will create a “low impact home” which they say will make a “positive, modern intervention within the landscape, and offer a rich response which is respectful to the natural, physical and historical environment”.
It says maps of the area show the land lying vacant from the mid 19th century until 1965 when it appeared to have been turned into tennis court for some years before becoming a car park for the distillery buildings next to it.
It adds: “The site currently comprises hard surfaced gravel to the east, adjoining the access off Mill Wynd. The remainder of the site is bordered by dense vegetation.
“It is understood from a desk-based study that the site was recently used for car parking and storage for the garage and industrial buildings associated with the Haddington Maltings Site, which have now been demolished.”
The new home will be next to Tynebank House which was built in the 1800s for a plantation merchant returning from Jamaica. The Georgian mansion is Category B-listed and boasts a separate building on the land housing its own swimming pool.
And it lies across the road from Millfield Park Football Ground, home to Haddington Athletic FC.
The plans for the proposed new house have been lodged on the East Lothian Council planning portal.
