A Bonnyrigg local is bringing their debut Fringe show to this year’s festival, centered around working class identity in the local setting of Dalkeith Miners Club.
Emerging Midlothian writer Kari Hall is hosting their ‘contemporary Midlothian story’ at the Underbelly Cowgate over the month of August, tackling how communities talk about and treat survivors of assault.
Fueled by alcoholic energy drink Dragon Soop and recklessness, Morgan is a hedonistic party girl who lives for their weekends at Dalkeith Miner’s club. But after experiencing a sexual assault, she is forced to confront her lack of ambition; her personal chaos; and the emptiness that remains when you are believed, but no one stands by your side.
‘HAME. TEETH. CLUB.’, presented by Iona Bremner and Slainte Theatre, draws on experiences of growing up in Midlothian, bringing a ‘distinctly working-class voice to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe’.
The performance is Kari’s first Edinburgh Fringe show despite 10 years in theatre, explaining the privilege of bringing a Midlothian story to the world’s biggest annual festival.
They told the Midlothian View: “It’s a privilege to be bringing a working class Midlothian story to an international stage, which addresses universal complex issues around trauma and accountability through a personal, local lens.
“I fear sometimes locals might feel underrepresented at the fringe so to be telling a story about the place where I grew up, which I love, is very exciting.”
Slainte Theatre added: “We want to talk about the kind of Scottish women we grew up around; funny, messy, resilient and complicated ones – not just tartan and ginger curls.
“We’re passionate about championing bold Scottish voices and creating work that speaks directly to contemporary audiences. HAME. TEETH. CLUB. is hilarious, heartbreaking and urgently relevant and explores what happens when a community chooses comfort over accountability.”
Described as playing with the cheeky and witty nature of Scottish humour, the show is written in a blend of colloquial Scots and English language. It explores the intricacies of female friendship as something that is sacred – but can be completely sidelined for male validation. At a time when conversations around consent, accountability and community responsibility remain central to public discourse, HAME. TEETH. CLUB. asks difficult questions about what support truly looks like.
Returning to the Fringe, this production is led by award-winning producer Iona Bremner, whose recent success with Diary of a Gay Disaster earned the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Studio Production in 2025. With a proven track record of championing bold new
writing, Bremner brings together a creative team dedicated to telling urgent, relevant stories with humour and heart.
