There will be booze for breakfast in Selkirk next month after approval was granted to a licensing bid.
An application for an extension of on sale hours to 8am to 10am at Ettrick Forest Bowling Club in Scotts Place prior to a Common Riding event on Friday, June 12, has been granted by Scottish Borders Council’s Licensing Board.
A condition was attached that alcohol is sold in conjunction with a cooked breakfast being served at the ticket-only event.
Applicant Tracey Biggs said: “We’re looking to sell alcohol with a full-cooked breakfast, which is not just a packet of crisps, which is a good thing.
“There is a lull in the ceremony at Selkirk with the horses leaving at 7.30 in the morning and they don’t come back into the town until about ten o’clock.
“Our members asked if this was something we could provide. It keeps people off the streets, which the police will be happy about because as there are quite a lot of people who like to roam around the streets with alcohol.”
Councillor Tom Weatherston said: “I’m more than happy to support this application. It’s very common around the Borders, in fact it’s a late start for a Common Riding breakfast.”
