Changes are afoot at a Palladian mansion in Berwickshire.
An application has been submitted to Scottish Borders Council for alterations to the existing storage yard, erection of a garage block with storage and formation of two new parking spaces with EV chargers at Marchmont House in Greenlaw.
The work will also involve the removal of the former hopper leading to the basement plant room and reinstatement of yard.
This work will reverse an addition formed during the 1980s when the house was used as a Sue Ryder Care Home.
Removal of the hopper will reveal a small area of house wall and provide additional parking space within the yard.
A report with the application states: “There is a currently a lack of purposeful storage in Marchmont House and the result of this is that the garage and corridors in staff areas become used for storage.
“This proposal seeks to form purposeful storage rooms within the service yard to the south of Marchmont House, to replace the existing steel portal shed and former lean-to shed (demolished on safety grounds).
“The buildings have been designed to stand independent of the existing garden wall ensuring that its longevity and structural integrity is not affected by the proposed works.
“The building will not affect the historic fabric of the building but will improve the overall aesthetic of this service area.
“The buildings will utilise high quality materials in the form of a natural stone basecourse and natural timber cladding.
“The roofs will be finished with a profiled metal sheet which is suited to the low pitch (designed to reduce the massing and overall height).
“The proposed works have been designed to be sympathetic to the setting of Marchmont House using high quality materials where possible and is designed to provide much needed storage space whilst also improving the aesthetic of the service yard.”
