Education is one of the most powerful tools we have to improve life chances – not only for individuals, but for the wider society and our economy. A strong education system leads to a skilled workforce, higher earnings, and a fairer society. While it’s clear that more must be done to improve our education system, we can take encouragement from recent update that the number of school leavers in positive destinations is now back to pre-pandemic levels.
Education sets us on a path for life. It shapes not only our careers but our values, confidence, and ability to contribute to our communities. If we want to raise standards for the next generation, we must ensure Scotland is the best place to grow
up and learn. Of course, there are challenges, but we can and must overcome them.
I know from speaking to teachers and parents that classroom behaviour is a growing concern. Techers must be empowered to manage their classrooms effectively. The disruption caused by COVID, and the rising number of pupils with additional support
needs, means we must do more to support teachers.
The Scottish Government is acting. New guidance for teachers to improve classroom behaviour has been welcomed by the Teacher’s Union. The newly passed Education (Scotland) Bill will replace the SQA with a modern body, Qualifications Scotland with a stronger focus on performance, and alignment with the needs of our economy. But we must go further – additional support for pupils and more classroom assistants are essential to ensure teachers can thrive in their role.
Investment in education must not be seen as a cost, but as an investment to foster a more prosperous, compassionate country. If we make the right choices now, we can increase the opportunities available to our young people.
