A stunning floral display has been created by council staff to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Capability Scotland.
Both the charity and local community have been delighted by the carpet bedding display in North Berwick’s Lodge Grounds.
Members of the council’s Amenity Services team brought to life the colourful tribute to mark the charity’s eight-decade milestone. Johnn Stevens, the service’s depot manager at North Berwick, created the design which was planted by gardeners Derek Adam, Danny Lamb and Ross Hutchison.
Johnn said: “I’m always looking for an event or anniversary to be celebrated in our carpet bed, which is a long-standing tradition in the Lodge Grounds. I read it was 80 years since Capability Scotland was founded in 1946 so I contacted them to asked if we could highlight their great work.
“I designed a plan using their logo, taking into account size and plant material, and chose typical carpet bedding plants. Derek, Danny and Ross did a great job with the planting.”
The design incorporated three types of sedums – Sperium, Spathulifolium, and Pachycladas – and also used Pyrethrum ‘Golden Moss’, Echeveria glauca, and Echeveria elegans. The outer area was finished with various annual bedding plants.
The plants were supplied by Angus Campbell and his colleagues at the council’s plant nursery.
The carpet bed will be visited by Britain in Bloom judges in August as North Berwick represents Scotland in the competition.
Victoria Roberts, spokesperson for Capability Scotland, said: “We are thrilled to have been recognised in the 2026 commemorative floral carpet bed in North Berwick’s Lodge Grounds.
“This year we are celebrating our 80th anniversary, a milestone that we are immensely proud of. Over the last eight decades we have supported disabled children and adults across Scotland to live their lives to the fullest. The floral bed is a fantastic, and accessible, recognition of our work.
“We thank the team for their hard work and wish them the best of luck in this year's Britain in Bloom competition!”
