Dun Law wind farm
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly
Moves for repowering a major Scottish Borders wind farm are poised to enter the planning stage.
The Dun Law Wind Farm at Oxton is an established onshore wind facility located in the western end of the Lammermuir Hills.
It spans the boundaries of the Scottish Borders, Midlothian, and East Lothian, situated near Soutra Hill, roughly 20 miles southeast of Edinburgh along the A68 trunk road.
The original phase of the wind farm was officially commissioned in August 2000 and then extended in 2007.
The wind farm is highly active and feeds its generated electricity directly into the National Grid under a standard power purchase agreement.
Current projections estimate that the existing footprint of the wind farm will approach the end of its operational lifespan and face decommissioning around 2034.
Now operator ScottishPower Renewables is planning to repower the facility with the construction, operation and decommissioning of up to 10 wind turbines with a maximum tip height of 220m, in conjunction with a proposed battery energy battery storage system.
Before entering the formal planning stage a Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) has been submitted to Scottish Borders Council.
A PAN does not mean construction is approved; it is an advance notice that a major project is coming.
Developers must submit the PAN to the council at least 12 weeks before they can officially apply for planning permission.
During this 12-week window, the developer must consult the local community which usually includes holding public consultation events.
In the case of Dun Law a public gathering and exhibition is to be staged on Friday, November 27 at Oxton War Memorial Hall from 1pm to 6.30pm.
