Flying the flag

Scottish Borders Council is flying the Armed Forces Day flag at its headquarters in Newtown St Boswells this week.
Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually to commemorate the service of men and women in the Forces. This year it takes place on Saturday, June 27.
The flag was raised at a ceremony in Newtown St Boswells on Monday, June 22, by reservists from Galashiels, Lieutenant Corporal Elphick and Sergeant Kelly.
Councillor John Greenwell, SBC’s Champion for Armed Forces and Veterans, said: “By raising the flag today we are once again showing our respect and admiration for the men and women who serve and have served in our Armed Forces, ensuring our safety and freedom.
“I would like to thank Scottish Borders Council for their continued support for the Armed Forces Covenant which is now fully embedded in all our policies and decision making processes.
“The support shown by local communities throughout this week across the Scottish Borders is deeply appreciated. As we come together, we recognise the efforts of all those who work tirelessly to maintain the safety and security of our nation.”
Lord-Lieutenant of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale John Jeffrey, was also in attendance his first Armed Forces Day since he took the office of Lord Lieutenant in 2025.
He said: “It was a privilege to attend my first Armed Forces Day flag raising as Lord-Lieutenant.
“This annual ceremony is a meaningful way to mark the contribution of our Armed Forces community and to reflect on the service, dedication and sacrifice of those who serve, and have served, our country.”
