Scottish Greens MSP Laura Moodie has called for improved public transport across South Scotland after a new report highlighted barriers to accessing food, housing, clothing and essential services.

Speaking following the release of ‘Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in the South of Scotland’ by the SHRC, Scottish Greens MSP for South Scotland, Laura Moodie, said:

“This report should be a wake-up call for the Scottish Government. Across South Scotland, people are struggling to access even the basics of food, housing and clothing. What comes through continuously is that these problems are all connected, and access to quality public transport is the theme running through them.

“A service can exist on paper, but that means very little if you cannot get to it. For rural communities, poor bus services can mean missing a hospital appointment, being unable to take a job, or simply being cut off from local services. That is why the Scottish Greens are pushing for improved bus connectivity in South Scotland, including fixing the failing X74 between Dumfries and Glasgow.

“The Scottish Greens are committed to delivering a minimum service guarantee for public transport, so that people in rural Scotland can depend on a basic level of connectivity wherever they live. Access to essential services should not depend on owning a car or having the money to travel long distances. If we are serious about tackling the inequalities highlighted in this report, reliable and affordable public transport has to be part of the answer.”
