South Scotland Green MSP Laura Moodie has called for improved evening bus services between Edinburgh, Midlothian and the Scottish Borders, highlighting the impact that limited late-night transport has on local economies and access to cultural activities.
Speaking in the Scottish Parliament, Laura Moodie raised concerns about the last X62 service from Edinburgh, which currently leaves the capital shortly before 10pm.
In her question to Minister Tom Arthur, the MSP said: “The last X62 service from Edinburgh to Penicuik, Peebles and Galashiels currently leaves Edinburgh just before 10pm and, for these communities, the time of the last bus restricts what they can do and how late they can stay at local venues.
“What assessment has the Scottish Government made of the adverse impact of limited evening bus services on the rural economy, particularly the hospitality and creative sectors?”
The minister responded: “I think the member raises a really important point about our night-time industries.
“If there are restrictions or constraints around connectivity resulting from services not running later in the evening, it is going to influence behaviour that will have a detrimental impact in hospitality.
“As much as it is a transport issue, it is an economic issue.”
Following the exchange, Laura Moodie said: “Reliable evening transport is vital for people living in rural communities.
“Towns such as Penicuik, Peebles and Galashiels have thriving cultural and hospitality sectors that contribute significantly to the local economy. Limited evening services can discourage visitors, reduce spending in local businesses and make it harder for workers to access employment opportunities.
“Improving public transport links is essential if we want to support rural economies, reduce car dependency and ensure that people in Midlothian can enjoy the same opportunities as those living in larger urban areas.
“I welcome the minister’s recognition that this is both a transport and an economic issue, and I look forward to further engagement on how evening bus services can better meet the needs of communities in Midlothian.”
