Lessons have been learned at a Scottish Borders care home where one resident told inspectors over the summer: “I want to do more”.

A Care Inspectorate report in July labelled St Andrew’s Care Home in Hawick ‘weak’ for both supporting residents well-being and its staff team.

But on a return visit on September 23 and 24 required improvements had been implemented and the home’s rating was raised to ‘adequate’ in both categories.

The service provides nursing and residential care and is registered for 30 people, including short breaks and respite.

At the time of the latest inspection there were 26 people living in the care home, which is owned by Bradford-based Park Homes (UK) Limited.

Inspectors found that residents experienced improved opportunities for meaningful activity, choice and social interaction, alongside a more positive and person-centred mealtime experience.

Leadership, governance and staffing arrangements had improved, resulting in safer, more consistent and responsive care.

The service had met five requirements and one area for improvement made at the previous inspection.

The report states: “Evidence gathered during the inspection demonstrated that progress had been made in relation to meaningful activities and engagement within the home.

“A varied and structured program of activities was now in place, providing people with regular opportunities for physical, recreational and meaningful occupation.

“People were observed being offered choice, encouragement to participate and support in accordance with their individual preferences and needs.

“Evidence gathered during the inspection provided assurance that the provider had taken appropriate action to strengthen staffing levels, staff deployment, governance of staffing arrangements and contingency planning.”
