The Bridge Guest House was partially demolished after the 2020 storm
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly
The remains of a Scottish Borders guest house and cafe almost washed away during an infamous storm more than six years ago have now gone on the market at an asking price of £40,000.
Back in February 2020 the Bridge Guest House beside the river Teviot in Hawick was severely damaged by Storm Ciara.
All guests were successfully evacuated as river levels rose and as cracks began to appear in the building’s walls.
Townsfolk watched in disbelief as large sections of the building began to fall into the river the following morning.
Since the partial collapse of the Bridge Guest House, a £106m flood defence scheme has been completed in Hawick, protecting about 970 buildings.
Work began on the project – one of the largest in Scotland – a few months after Storm Ciara.
It has been designed to protect about 1,000 homes from a one-in-75-year event and consists of about two miles (3km) of flood defences.
Although some of the old building has gone, the remainder – now surrounded by high walls – still has seven en-suite bedrooms over two floors, although little is left of the cafe.
Selling agents Jim Hay stated: “This former cafe and guest house was severely damaged by a flood in February 2020 as an effect of Storm Ciara, causing part of the building to collapse into the river Teviot.
“Since then the Hawick Flood Protection Scheme has been put in place and the former building made safe and viable for sale.
“The property is being sold as seen, and any new building must be within the original footprint of the existing building.
“The property is subject to restrictions which prohibit construction on the majority of the land surrounding the existing building and impose loading restrictions on the land.
“Further details are available upon request.”
