Eildon Housing development at Westruther

A ‘green’ housing development in a Borders village that “changed the lives of so many” has been nominated for a top award.

Selkirk-based Eildon Housing Association has announced that the company had been short-listed as a finalist in the Scottish Home Awards 2026 for its Edgar Court development at Westruther.

The company officially opened the 10-home development in September last year, the project providing high-energy-efficient social rented homes for the village.

The properties include air source heat pumps and are maintained with lower running costs.

They are designed to ‘Passivhaus’ standards, aiming to use 90 per cent less energy than standard buildings.

This high energy efficient homes project also had a local lettings policy in place, giving preference to those people who lived in the area.

An Eildon spokesperson said: “Supporting and strengthening our communities is at the heart of everything we do – and we’re delighted to to be recognised for making a difference in Westruther with our high-efficiency homes.

“A huge thank you to everyone that was involved with this project. There were a few challenges on the way, but we have a impressive development that has changed the lives of so many.”

Eildon’s Chief Executive Nile Istephan revealed that the development was not without its challenges.

He explained: “Unfortunately, the building contractor went into administration and this meant we had to procure a new contractor.

“Cruden came on board and rebuilt the homes using a timber construction.

“These green homes have a higher specification in terms of air-tightness and have the latest mechanical ventilation and heat recovery systems with excellent insulation.”

Scottish Government and Scottish Borders Council have also been thanked for their financial contributions to this project.
