SGN at work
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly
Disruption is in the pipeline for people in Innerleithen as an essential gas network upgrade begins later this month.
Scotia Gas Networks (SGN) will start the work in the Horsburgh Street area of the town on Monday, October 19.
The project involves replacing old metal mains that are reaching the end of their useful lives, with new modern plastic pipe.
This new pipe will ensure a safe and reliable gas supply for the community for decades to come.
In agreement with Scottish Borders Council, the work will last for approximately eight weeks, completing in December.
To do this safely, SGN need to close Horsburgh Street, at its junction with Peebles Road and Queen Street.
A diversion route will be in place along Chambers Street and Buccleuch Street. Two-way traffic lights will also be in place along the A72 Peebles Road and Pirn Road.
An SGN spokesperson said: “We’ve worked closely with the local highways team to plan our essential project, and will be doing everything we can to limit.
“We appreciate that projects like this can be frustrating, and we’re working as quickly and as safely as possible.
“We’d like to thank everyone affected for their patience, understanding and support as we work to ensure a safe and reliable gas supply in Innerleithen for decades to come.”
SGN manages the network which distributes natural and green gas to approximately six million homes and businesses across Scotland and southern England.
Its pipes deliver gas safely, reliably and efficiently to each of these customers.
