A bid by an insect repellent company to move into a former gym on a Kelso industrial estate has been deemed fit for purpose.

The KD Fitness Studio in Kelso’s Sprouston Road recently closed its doors and relocated to a larger venue in the town.

Now Pyramid Travel Products Limited has gained approval from Scottish Borders Council planners to move into the vacant premises to provide improved office, administration and welfare accommodation.

The company manufactures and distributes insect repellents, including protection from mosquitoes, midges and similar biting insects, in addition to other travel health products.

The proposal would allow the occupation of the existing industrial-style unit for “low-impact light manufacturing, mixing, filling, packing, associated office use, storage and distribution”.

In his report approving the application, SBC assistant planning officer Euan Calvert states: “The proposals will not conflict with the established land use of the area and will not detract from the character of the area and would be appropriate in terms of scale, mass, height and material in the context of its surroundings. Visually the building will appear identical.”

The application property is an existing portal-framed commercial unit with ancillary accommodation and parking area at Station Yard.

The location formed part of a railway goods yard which has been redeveloped since its closure in 1968.

Pyramid Travel Products Limited currently employs six full-time staff at Kelso’s Pinnaclehill Industrial Estate.

A spokesperson for KD Fitness spoke with fondness of the three years spent at Sprouston Road and on the exciting adventure ahead at a new location in Soloman Way.

They said: “Three years. That’s what this place gave us. We closed the doors after our final session and it hit a bit harder than expected.

“This gym has been more than just a space. It’s been early mornings, late nights, graft, laughs, PBs, setbacks, wins, and moments that will stick with me for life.

“Some of the best memories and some of the toughest ones too. But that’s what makes it what it is.

“To every single member who’s walked through those doors, thank you. You’ve built this. Your energy, your effort, your support, that’s the reason we’re even in a position to take the next step. Next chapter of KD Fit. Bigger. Better. Stronger.

“Same community. Same standards. Just elevated.”
