The Hillsborough Law was approved by MPs this week, more than three decades since the disaster.
The law change, officially known as the Public Office (Accountability) Bill, will create a legally enforceable “duty of candour”, making it a legal duty for public officials to tell the truth to inquiries and investigations.
It will also ensure victims of disasters or state-related deaths are entitled to parity of legal representation during inquests and inquiries, and has been supported by victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, the infected blood scandal and bereaved Covid families.
Midlothian MP Kirsty McNeill welcomed the news, saying: “Labour made a promise to the families of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster that the state would no longer be able to hide from those it is meant to protect.”
“Now, thanks to their campaigning, and the Bill just passed by our Labour Government, no one will have to fight the state for the truth.”
“This is an incredibly proud moment and a huge step forward for justice for the families who suffered the most appalling injustice.”
As criminal law is devolved, these proposals apply only to England and Wales.
