Co-op Member Owners gathered in strong numbers at the South of Scotland regional AGM event, held at Prestonpans Community Centre on Saturday 16 May, for an engaging event celebrating Co-operative democracy, community and heritage.

Organiser Marjory Hatvany said:

“It was encouraging to see such a good turn-out, with members attending individually and within local groups including Preston Pals, Catching the Past, and the Cockenzie & Port Seton Community Choir – demonstrating the Co-op’s deep roots in the local community.”

The central feature of the day was the opportunity for members to take part in Co-op democracy in action. Attendees watched a livestream of the main Co-op AGM in Manchester before joining a locally hosted discussion. NMC representative John Nicholls hosted the event with warmth and skill, inviting members to share their views on the motion relating to the Co-op’s showcasing of British produce. The discussion generated valuable feedback, ensuring that the voices of local member-owners contribute to the wider national conversation.

The event also celebrated local history and creativity. Social history group Catching the Past presented a film created by Jan and Caroline, both long-term Co-op members, as a tribute to their late colleague Ros. Supported by funding from Salt of the Earth and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the film explored the legacy of the Rochdale Pioneers and the Edinburgh St Cuthbert’s Co-operative, while highlighting the enduring relevance of co-operative values today.

Entertainment was provided by the Cockenzie & Port Seton Community Choir, who received warm and enthusiastic applause for their eclectic mix of pop and folk songs. Members were also able to enjoy a fascinating exhibition from the Preston Pals group, showcasing highlights from John Greenwood’s remarkable historic photograph collection, with a particular focus on local Co-op heritage.

Feedback from attendees reflected the success of the day. Member-owner Harry shared: “I was overwhelmed by the Co‑op members event at Prestonpans… this presentation by far exceeded my expectation… ‘ten out of ten’ for effort and results.”

He added: “I came away full of happiness and admiration for such a professional and well managed occasion presented by a team of wonderful people.”

Overall, the event demonstrated Co-op democracy at its best, with member-owners actively participating, sharing ideas, and strengthening the sense of community at the heart of the movement.
