Defending Genesis Scottish Open champion Robert MacIntyre has opened the new Scott Stewart Stand at the Renaissance Club – named in honour of the Motor Neuron Disease campaigner who passed away last year.
Scott was diagnosed with MND in 2023 and since then had been actively raising awareness of the condition with the help of the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. He passed away on December 22, 2024.
Last summer, after years of attending the Genesis Scottish Open as a fan, he played the role of the Honorary Starter of the Pro-Am, joining MacIntyre alongside the My Name’5 Doddie Pro-Am team featuring former Scottish rugby international Rob Wainwright, ex-professional footballer Scott Brown and actor Dougray Scott.
Now, 12 months on, the stand behind the ninth green bears his name and MacIntyre, whose bag this week sports the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation tartan, officially opened the stand along with Scott’s wife, Robin.
“With the bag this year, we go to certain events and try to make it special for the event,” he said. “This year, obviously, with the passing of Scott – I’ve got a close family friend who has now also got MND – we thought, ‘well, what a place to do it’.
“I’m going to try my best to raise awareness. There’s so many other people like Scott that have done a great job of raising awareness and raising money for the cause. I’m just a small part of trying to keep it going.”
He added: “Obviously it’s a sad occasion (opening the stand) but his family, his wife, his parents were there, as well.
“It’s just trying to battle a hellish disease to be honest with you. And I keep saying it: I’m just a small, small part of that. I try my best to raise as much money, awareness, everything that we can to try and battle this disease.”
