A Midlothian software company has launched a new mobile app designed to make organising golf sweeps and competitions easier for golfers around the world.
Golf Sweep, developed by Dalkeith-based Pigeon Penguin Web & App Development, allows golfers to create competitions, enter scores, track leaderboards and run popular side competitions such as Front 9, Back 9 and Twos, all from their smartphone.
The app has been developed over the last few months by Pigeon Penguin director Phil Bowen, who wanted to create a simpler and more golfer-friendly alternative to some of the more complex competition systems currently available.
Bowen said:
“Golf Sweep was born out of a simple idea – making it easy for groups of golfers to organise competitions without having to rely on paper scorecards, spreadsheets or complicated software.”
“Many golf groups run weekly sweeps, society days and golf trips, but there isn’t always an easy way to manage scores, leaderboards and side competitions. Golf Sweep aims to make that process straightforward and enjoyable.”
The app allows organisers to create golf sweeps, add players, create competitions and track results in real time. Players can enter scores hole-by-hole, view live leaderboards throughout a round and see the Order of Merit across the playing season.
Recent updates have also introduced sub-competitions, allowing golfers to compete for prizes on the Front 9, Back 9, First 6 Holes and Twos, reflecting the way many golf societies and informal groups already play.
Although developed in Midlothian, Golf Sweep has been designed for golfers anywhere in the world and is available on both Apple and Android devices.
Pigeon Penguin, which was founded in Midlothian in 2014, develops websites, mobile apps and custom software solutions for businesses and organisations across the UK.
Bowen believes Golf Sweep still has plenty of room to grow.
“We’re currently gathering feedback from early users and already have a list of enhancements planned. It’s exciting to see golfers using something that was designed and built here in Midlothian.
“The sweep that I play in has been using it for the last few months and it has proven to be easy to use. I really don’t like the responsibility of working out stableford scores on the course and now the app takes care of that. It also adds a competitive edge being able to see the live leaderboard whilst you play.
“The Order of Merit is a feature I am really pleased with as it shows who is the leading player week to week.”
