Midlothian ranks as the second most well-served leisure provider for swimming pools in Scotland per head and household when comparing it to other leisure providers, according to recent data from the Scottish Leisure Network Group (SLNG) provided to Midlothian View.

Midlothian has a population of 97,030 and 41,217 households and the county is home to six swimming pools. This makes Midlothian the second most well-served area in Scotland for swimming pools with one swimming pool per 16,172 of the population (6,870 households).

The six swimming pools are Newbattle Campus, Lasswade Centre, Loanhead Leisure Centre, Penicuik Leisure Centre, Beeslack Community High School and Dalkeith Community Campus. Beeslack and Dalkeith are managed by the council’s education external partner BAM and the other four by the council.

The area with the the lowest population per pool in Scotland is Highland Leisure which has 17 pools across their council district, resulting in 13,865 people per pool. The Highland council area is the largest council in Scotland by land area, covering about one-third of the country’s total landmass, approximately 10,085 square miles with a population of approximately 236,330.

Recently in a discussion surrounding the £115 million budget for the new Beeslack High School, Councillor Derek Milligan highlighted that the council needs to ‘get a grip’ on its spending, calling for a pause on the development, he said that amongst there being no need for the new school it especially doesn’t need a pool that takes up a large amount of the budget.
