Children and staff at Scots Corner Early Learning and Childcare Centre in Penicuik are better equipped for outdoor adventures thanks to funding from Midlothian Councillor Pauline Winchester.
Councillor Winchester, who is also Midlothian Council’s Armed Forces and Veterans Champion, donated some of her community fund to help the nursery purchase a range of outdoor clothing and protective equipment for children and staff.
The money has enabled the centre to buy dry robes, hats and hoodies for staff, as well as a core set of waterproof jackets, waterproof trousers, socks, gloves and hats for children attending the setting.
Scots Corner operates in partnership with 2 SCOTS at nearby Glencorse Barracks and supports many children from military families. The new clothing will help ensure children can continue to enjoy outdoor learning throughout the year, whatever the weather.
Staff regularly make use of local woodland areas close to the nursery, giving children opportunities to learn, play and explore in nature while supporting their health and wellbeing.
Stacey Burns-Clark, the Scots Corner Early Years Centre Manager, said: “Spending time outdoors is a really important part of what we do and has huge benefits for children’s health, wellbeing and development. We wanted to remove some of the practical barriers that can prevent children and staff from accessing these wonderful outdoor spaces, particularly during the colder and wetter months.
“Thanks to Councillor Winchester’s support, we now have the equipment needed to help children enjoy outdoor learning in comfort and safety throughout the year.
“The new clothing has also helped strengthen our identity within the community. The children’s outdoor clothing is purple, which is widely recognised as the colour of military children, and features our logo, helping to celebrate our connection with military families.”
Councillor Pauline Winchester said: “I was delighted to support Scots Corner Early Learning and Childcare Centre through my community fund. The centre does fantastic work with local children, including many from military families, and I know how important outdoor play and learning can be for children’s wellbeing, confidence and development.
“This funding will help ensure children and staff can continue to enjoy the outdoors in all seasons, making the most of the excellent natural environment on their doorstep.”
