City Scope Midlothian planning portal

Midlothian residents can now access public planning information easier as City Scope is launched in the county following a successful Edinburgh version.
City Scope, created by Harry Williams who is a Automation & Systems Analyst at Rettie, the website aims to ‘make public planning information easier to scan’, creating an alternative to the Midlothian Council’s planning portal which can be difficult to navigate.
The planning feed brings together recent applications, map context, categories, plain-English summaries, impact scores, images, documents and links back to the official council record.
Harry highlighted that it doesn’t take away from the council’s portal or the formal commenting process, but instead just aims to present the public information clearer with the official website just one click away.
He explained: “The idea is not to replace Midlothian Council’s official planning portal or the formal commenting process. It is more of a clearer front door into the same public information, so residents, community councils, journalists and local groups can spot what is happening and decide what needs a closer look.
“I started with Edinburgh and have now added Midlothian because the official portals can be hard work if you are trying to quickly understand what has changed locally.”
Proving popular in Edinburgh, Harry provides weekly planning reports and updates in the aim to ‘simplify complicated planning jargon’.
The new Midlothian feed is available here, providing up to date information on planning applications across the county.
