Tweed Horizons Business Centre
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly
Plans have been revealed to convert part of a Borders business centre deemed “no longer suited to modern commercial occupation” into an 17-home housing development.
The principal building on Tweed Horizons Business Centre in Newtown St Boswells dates from the 1930s and was originally constructed as St Columba’s College, a residential seminary complex.
The building remained vacant for several decades until 1993, when planning permission was granted for its conversion to business use.
It has since operated as Tweed Horizons Business Centre, accommodating serviced offices, conference facilities and shared workspaces.
Now an application has been submitted to Scottish Borders Council for its change of use to form 14 residential flats and three dwelling houses.
Applicant Tweed Horizons Ltd is proposing to create a mixed use development that combines residential accommodation with the continued operation of commercial office and conference facilities.
A report with the application states: “The proposal represents the sensitive adaptive reuse of the existing Tweed Horizons Business Centre.
“It will secure a viable long-term future for an established building group that is no longer fully suited to modern commercial occupation, while retaining an element of office and conference accommodation within the principal building.
“The development therefore provides a balanced mixed-use solution that responds to the existing character and operational history of the site.”
