Mill Wynd next to Aubigny Sports Centre in Haddington has become a popular school drop off point for parents

Plans to put double yellow lines along a popular school drop off point have been put forward by East Lothian Council to tackle ‘indiscriminate parking’.
The local authority has put its proposals to introduce the parking ban outside a sports centre in Haddington out to public consultation.
It comes more than a decade after the local authority became the first in Scotland to introduce a ‘school street’ ban on parents using roads leading directly to the town’s primary school campus during traditional drop off and pick up times.
In 2014 East Lothian Council barred cars from three roads leading to Haddington Primary School, which was known at the time as Kings Meadow Primary School and Haddington Infant School, as well as neighbouring St Mary’s RC Primary School.
The ban remains in place during the week between 8.30am and 9.30am and between 3pm and 4pm Monday to Thursday and 11.45am to 12.45pm on Fridays.
Now it is aiming to extend the ban to cover more than 640 metres of new lines along Mill Wynd a short distance from the schools which has become a regular place for parents to drop off and collect children.
In the council’s statement of reason for the ban it says it is “to prevent indiscriminate parking blocking junction visibility splays in the interests of road safety”.
Maps of the new stretches of no parking lines show them on either side of the street outside Aubigny Sports Centre car park and its all weather pitches as well as Haddington Rugby Club’s grounds and neighbouring Neilston Park.
The maps state that the aim of the ban is to ” stop indiscriminate parking during school drop off and sports events”.
The consultation is running on East Lothian Consultation Hub until the end of next week with people able to lodge objections through details given on the website.
Haddington is one of a number of towns in East Lothian where the council is also planning to introduce a town centre parking management system with parking meters and residents permits among the proposed measures to charge people.
The proposals face opposition from local traders who have made repeated attempts to pause the plans amid claims a scheme already operating in North Berwick is having a negative impact on tourism and trade for local businesses.
