Prompt action has been taken by a supermarket manager after a Scottish Borders councillor alerted her to a serious crack in a car park wall next to the premises.

Kelso and District Councillor Euan Robson has welcomed the “prompt and comprehensive approach” taken by management at the Roxburgh Street retail outlet.

Mr Robson has now advised townsfolk to stay clear of the car park wall in Shedden Park Road as measures are pursued to ensure the area is safe.

Mr Robson said: “I was very grateful to the store manager who reported the issue straight-away after I had shown it to her.

“Subsequently a structural engineer has attended and recommended remedial actions.

“At first sight it would seem that a bush which has grown into a tree is causing the split. Once the tree is removed it should be more clear as to the extent of the necessary repairs.

“In the meantime the Co-op, in discussion with Scottish Borders Council, will take measures to make the area safe.

“There may be issues as to who owns which parts of the wall and thus who will be liable and have to take responsibility for the work but the Co-op is clarifying them.

“I would urge the public to stay away from the immediate area especially on the Cobby below as a sensible precaution.”
