Pupils on a nature day

Pupils at a Hawick school turned ‘nature detectives’ this week to explore an award-winning town park.
Scottish Borders Council (SBC) hosted an event at Wilton Lodge Park to launch children’s materials encouraging young people, both local and visitors, to explore and enjoy our region’s greenspaces.
The event was attended by enthusiastic P1s and P2s from Trinity Primary School.
Throughout the day, pupils took part in activities at the walled garden and Hawick Museum, where they learned more about the sites before meeting members of the council’s Parks and Environment team and exploring the machinery used to maintain the park.
Between sessions, the children also had the opportunity to try out the new greenspace materials launched by SBC ahead of summer.
The greenspace materials are a series of fun, family-friendly outdoor activities to help children discover more about the nature on their doorstep throughout the year.
The materials include nature detective activity sheets to guide children through what to look for in local parks and greenspaces as the seasons change.
There is also ‘Seasonal Chatterbox’, a fold your own game that encourages children to explore using their senses, imagination, and curiosity.
Children are encouraged to collect acorns and take part in ‘Grow Your Own Oak Tree’, a hands-on activity that begins with a simple walk in your local park.
Councillor Jenny Linehan, SBC’s executive member for Environment, Sustainability and Transport, said: “These materials present a fantastic opportunity for young people to discover the wildlife and natural beauty right on their doorstep all year round.
“The activity sheets are available free on our website, allowing children to enjoy them throughout the year, especially now, with the warmer weather and summer just around the corner.”
