River Tweed Gin

A Borders environmental charity is raising a glass to toast the River Tweed.
Tweed Forum has launched a new craft gin to help raise funds for its conservation work across the 5,000 km² River Tweed catchment and aid the survival of the river’s Atlantic salmon population.
River Tweed Gin been distilled at Selkirk Distillery in the heart of the Scottish Borders, and a portion of each sale will go to support Tweed Forum’s native tree planting projects to help protect and enhance the river, its wildlife and the fish that rely on it.
The River Tweed is one of the most famous salmon rivers in the world, but its fish populations are threatened by climate change and the adverse effects of decades of habitat loss and land use intensification.
Tree planting is a vital element of Tweed Forum’s work, bringing multiple benefits for the river environment and helping to provide the cool, clean waters and biologically rich environment that support the life cycle of salmon, from spawning to juvenile development and beyond.
The charity has planted over 1.6 million trees to date but many more are needed.
River Tweed Gin has been carefully distilled using botanicals foraged from the river’s surrounding landscape including water mint and sweet cicely.
The result is a crisp, refreshing gin with a fresh, vital aroma and delicate grassy, herbal notes.
Tweed Forum CEO, Luke Comins, said: “The River Tweed is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation but the river environment, its salmon and wildlife face many challenges.
“Planting native trees in the right place and at the right scale is one of the best ways to help and provides multiple benefits for the river environment.
“We hope that people from the Borders, north Northumberland and beyond will purchase a bottle of our new River Tweed Gin and help our efforts to protect and enhance this very special river and the salmon fishery it supports.”
River Tweed Gin costs £38.00 for a 70cl bottle (plus postage), with £7 from every bottle supporting Tweed Form’s work. It can be purchased through the Selkirk Distillery website.
