Recently parents of pupils who use school transport have been receiving emails from Midlothian Council to say they are no longer entitled to free bus travel whereas they were entitled last year.
We contacted the council to ask why some pupils are now no longer eligible.
A Midlothian Council spokesman told us:
“Whilst Midlothian Council have only minor changes to the approved travel policy from last year, the way eligibility is assessed has changed heading into this academic year.
“We now use specialist mapping software to calculate the distance between a pupil’s home and school using recognised walking routes. Previously, these calculations were carried out manually. This provides a more accurate, consistent and transparent method of assessing eligibility.
“Additionally, families are now required to apply for school transport each year. In the past, pupils who received transport one year were automatically allocated a place the following year. However, with new housing developments, changing road networks and improvements to transport infrastructure, circumstances can change over time. An annual application process helps ensure that transport is allocated fairly and based on current information.
“We appreciate some families will feel disappointed. However, all pupils who meet the eligibility criteria, which are based on Scottish Government guidance, will continue to be provided with school transport.
“Decision letters were issued to all applicants last week and should arrive, if they have not already done so, within the next few days.”
