ScotRail recorded more than 200,000 passenger journeys on Sunday, 26 July making it the busiest Sunday since the train operator returned to public ownership in April 2022.
Last Sunday’s total of 201,463 journeys included tens of thousands of people attending Commonwealth Games events such as bowls, weightlifting, netball, swimming, boxing, basketball, and gymnastics, at venues across Glasgow.
During the Games, to help customers travel, ScotRail has been operating additional services calling at Dalmarnock, Exhibition Centre, and Scotstounhill, alongside extra evening services.
The record-breaking figures are part of an upward trend this summer which saw more than seven million journeys recorded in June.
Train travel is being boosted by a busy summer of events which has seen ScotRail assist customers to travel to concerts, festivals, and sporting events all over the country including TRNSMT, Take That, Zach Bryan, Luke Combs, and the Summer Sessions at Bellahouston.
And ScotRail is expecting even more customers to take the train over the coming weeks with additional services already confirmed for the Edinburgh Festivals.
Extra ScotRail staff are also on hand across the network to provide travel information and help customers reach venues safely and with confidence.
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, said:
“It’s fantastic to see so many people choosing the train to get to sporting occasions like the Commonwealth Games, as well as leisure or retail destinations across the country.
“This summer has been one of the most packed ever for events, and we’ve seen our busiest Sunday since April 2022 following on from the seven million passenger journeys recorded in June.
“We’re looking forward to helping customers travel with confidence by rail during another busy month in August with extra trains and seats already in place in the timetable for the Edinburgh Festivals.”
