ScotRail is urging passengers to check their journeys before travelling as strong winds and heavy rain are forecast to hit Scotland on Tuesday.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning covering large parts of the country from 3am until 9pm on October 27.

Wind gusts of 50-60mph are expected in many areas, with speeds potentially exceeding 70mph along the coast and in northern Scotland.

Network Rail has confirmed that speed restrictions will be introduced on several routes as a safety precaution, with heavy rainfall also expected.

The restrictions mean trains will travel more slowly than usual, potentially causing longer journey times, delays and cancellations.

The affected routes are:

– Glasgow Queen Street to Oban and Mallaig
– Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh
– Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh Waverley to Inverness
– Aberdeen to Inverness
– Glasgow Central to Largs
– Glasgow Queen Street to Helensburgh Central
– Ayr to Stranraer
– Inverness to Wick and Thurso

ScotRail is advising passengers to allow extra time for their journeys and check for updates before setting off.

Customers are also encouraged to download the latest version of the ScotRail app, available through the Google Play and Apple App stores. Travel information will also be available on the ScotRail website and social media channels.

Mark Ilderton, ScotRail’s service delivery director, said: “Safety is always our top priority, and with more strong winds and heavy rain across Scotland on Tuesday, we’re asking customers to plan ahead and check their journey before travel.

“As a precautionary measure, some routes will have speed restrictions in place. These are essential to keep everyone safe but will mean some services may be delayed or altered at short notice.

“We’ll be working closely with Network Rail throughout, and our teams will do everything possible to keep people moving where it’s safe to do so.

“We’d encourage customers to make sure they have the latest version of the ScotRail app and check their journey before setting off.”
