South of Scotland MSP Duncan Dunlop

Responding to figures from Transport Scotland showing that there more than 100 road casualties in the South of Scotland in 2025, Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for the region, Duncan Dunlop warned that more still needs to be done to upgrade roads.
The Key Reported Road Casualties Scotland 2025 figures show:
– In 2025, Dumfries & Galloway recorded 323 casualties while Scottish Borders recorded 112 casualties
– The number killed on Scotland’s roads fell from 160 in 2024 to 134 in 2025.
– Scotland-wide, there was a decrease in casualties for all severities. In 2025: serious casualties fell by 4% (from 1,978 to 1,906); slight casualties fell by 3% (from 3,594 to 3,495); and total casualties fell by 3% (from 5,732 to 5,535).
However, the publication also notes that the 2025 numbers are: “not on track to meet the framework target for 2030” of reducing fatalities by 50% compared to 2014-18. They are also not on track to meet the 2030 targets for a 50% reduction in those seriously injured and a 60% reduction in children seriously injured.
Duncan Dunlop said:
“There are still far too many casualties on roads across the Scottish Borders.
“I don’t want to see any more families left without loved ones because the Scottish Government continues to drag its heels when it comes to tackling dangerous roads.
“Local communities and road safety communities are clear that roadsare long overdue for improvements.
“These upgrades would offer an economic boost too.
“When he gets back from the World Cup, the new Transport Secretary needs to get serious about improving road safety across the South of Scotland.”
