Tontine Hotel, Borders

A bid for a temporary outside bar at a popular Peebles hotel which initially raised some concerns with Police Scotland has been approved after a compromise was reached.
When members of Scottish Borders Council’s Licensing Board met this week they agreed a change to the premises licence at The Tontine Hotel in the town’s High Street.
The frontage area was previously for car parking but currently has several tables and chairs for use of customers utilising the off-sale provision that the premises licence allows.
The variation sought to include this outside frontage area within the premises licence footprint, allowing the applicant to provide alcohol via table service and by ordering alcohol via an online application.
In a submission to the board, Police Scotland’s Chief Superintendent Gregg Banks asked members to impose conditions to the application.
Those included the use of plastic or toughened glass and that a designated premises manager is present at all times the bar is open.
The applicant also agreed that the temporary bar would only be used on five occasions during the year, including during the town’s Beltane Festival and the switching on of the Christmas lights.
Last orders at the outside bar will be limited to 9pm and noise level conditions have also been imposed.
