Disclosure Scotland is urging tutors across Scotland to check their legal requirements under the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme, ahead of the prelim exam season that typically runs from November to February.
It is a criminal offence to work or volunteer in a regulated role, such as tutoring children, without holding a valid PVG scheme membership for the vulnerable group you are working with. Anyone unsure of their obligations is being encouraged to check their legal requirement now, rather than risk prosecution later.
Parents, carers and guardians who hire a tutor privately are classed as personal employers. Disclosure Scotland is advising them to ask any prospective tutor to share their Confirmation of PVG scheme membership with them before engaging them to support a student. This should be shared through the tutor’s own Disclosure Scotland account – this ensures that parents, carers and guardians are told if the tutor is later placed under consideration for listing.
Tutors who need to apply for PVG scheme membership can find clear guidance on how to do so at mygov.scot. The site also offers practical advice and examples for personal employers, helping them understand what checks to carry out and why they matter.
