Bonnyrigg darts pro David Sharp heads to Leicester this week for the final two Players Championship events of his debut professional season, with qualification for two major tournaments still within reach.
The Midlothian player will compete in Players Championships 33 and 34 on Wednesday and Thursday, bringing the curtain down on his first year on the PDC ProTour.
After securing his Tour Card at Q-School in January, Sharp has enjoyed an impressive debut campaign, reaching his maiden Players Championship semi-final and breaking into the world’s top 100.
However, there is still plenty to play for as he looks to secure places at both the PDC World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace and the Players Championship Finals in Minehead.
Sharp currently sits 37th among the 40 provisional qualifiers through the ProTour Order of Merit for the World Championship, leaving him in a strong position to make his debut on darts’ biggest stage.
The ProTour qualification places are awarded to the highest-ranked eligible players who have not already qualified through the main PDC Order of Merit, with prize money earned across Players Championship and European Tour events determining the standings.
With the World Championship becoming one of the highlights of the Christmas sporting calendar, a first appearance at Alexandra Palace would represent a remarkable achievement in Sharp’s opening year as a professional.
There is also an equally tight battle for a place at the Players Championship Finals, which take place at Butlin’s Minehead Resort from November 27 to 29.
Sharp currently occupies 63rd place in the Players Championship Order of Merit, with only the top 64 players qualifying for the televised tournament.
His £32,500 in Players Championship prize money leaves him narrowly inside the qualification places, although the standings could change considerably over the final two events.
Unlike the World Championship race, the Players Championship Finals qualification table is based solely on prize money earned across the 34 Players Championship events.
It means every victory in Leicester could prove crucial, with Sharp hoping to add to his ranking totals and secure a place at both major tournaments.
“To be going into the last two events of my first year as a professional with a chance of qualifying for both the Worlds and Minehead is something I would have taken at the start of the year. There’s still a lot to play for and hopefully I can finish the year on a high.”
While the immediate focus is on securing qualification, Sharp also has the longer-term ambition of establishing himself among the world’s top 64.
PDC Tour Cards are initially awarded for two years, meaning Sharp has until the end of the 2027 season to finish inside the top 64 of the main PDC Order of Merit and secure his professional status without returning to Q-School.
Having already made significant progress during his first season, the Bonnyrigg darts player will be hoping to carry that momentum into next year, regardless of what happens in Leicester.
“It’s been a massive learning curve this year. I’ve played against some of the best players in the world and had some great moments along the way. There’s still plenty I want to improve, but I’m proud of what I’ve achieved so far. The aim now is to keep improving and give myself the best possible chance of getting into that top 64 next year.”
The final two events take place at Leicester’s Mattioli Arena on November 4 and 5, with play scheduled to begin at midday UK time.
By late Thursday afternoon, Sharp should have a much clearer picture of whether his debut professional season will be extended by appearances at Minehead and Alexandra Palace.
“I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported me over the last 12 months. From family and friends to sponsors and everyone who has followed my results and sent messages of encouragement, it really does mean a lot.
“It’s been an incredible journey so far.”
