A major new housing and leisure development at an historic country house in the Scottish Borders has reached the planning stage.
Approval is being sought for the change of use of historic Gattonside House near Melrose into 14 flats, with the erection nearby of 34 dwelling houses, two padel courts and a cafe.
The bid submitted to Scottish Borders Council this week also seeks permission for conversion of a new dwelling house from a former Coach House and cottage at the site on land south of Hoebridge in Bakers Road.
Proposals additionally include the demolition of a B-Listed chapel associated with Gattonside House as well as the flattening of two un-listed single storey dwelling houses and two garages.
A report with the application, from Gattonside Developments Limited, states: “At the centre of the proposals is the restoration and sustainable reuse of Gattonside House.

“The listed building has remained vacant for a prolonged period and has suffered significant deterioration as a result of water ingress, decay and lack of maintenance.
“The proposed residential conversion seeks to secure its long-term future by retaining and restoring the principal elevations, main staircase, significant internal spaces and other surviving features that contribute to its architectural and historic interest.”
Four-storey Gattonside House, a category-B listed building, was constructed by Darnick builders John and Thomas Smith in 1826.
The property was the administrative headquarters of The Brothers of Charity for most of the 20th century.
It has been acquired by developer Fortis Homes and the company is looking to restore the property alongside the delivery of new-build homes.
Fortis Homes has engaged with the local community for feedback on the development proposal.
