UCU members from universities across Scotland gathered outside the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh today (Thursday 1 October) for a rally against cuts and job losses in the university sector.

The rally was organised by UCU branches at the universities of Dundee and Edinburgh and took place as staff at several Scottish universities continue industrial action.

Staff at the University of Edinburgh are currently taking part in a five-week strike over proposed cuts and compulsory redundancies. The university announced plans for £140 million of cuts, while UCU says around 1,800 jobs could be at risk. The union has also raised concerns over the proposed closure of 90 programmes.

Staff from universities including Edinburgh, Dundee, Glasgow Caledonian and Heriot-Watt were represented at today’s rally, alongside students and UCU representatives.

UCU general secretary Jo Grady and speakers from striking branches were among those addressing the rally.

Midlothian View was there to capture the event.
