A clampdown on rogue fishing in the River Tweed has been carried out as a plea to the public is issued.
River Tweed Commission water bailiffs have recently undertaken joint patrols with officers from Police Scotland’s Community Policing Team.
The patrols focused on locations identified as being particularly vulnerable to illegal salmon fishing and poaching activity, helping to protect the catchment’s important fish populations.
Over the coming months, the Commission’s water bailiffs will continue to work closely with Police Scotland’s wildlife crime officers and community police officers as part of ongoing enforcement activity throughout the catchment.
As the spawning season approaches for Atlantic salmon, sea trout and brown trout, patrols will increase across the Tweed and its tributaries.
Enforcement activity will focus on detecting, deterring and preventing illegal fishing and poaching offences at a time when fish are particularly vulnerable.
Jamie Stewart, clerk to the River Tweed Commission, said: “Joint working with Police Scotland is an important part of protecting fish stocks across the Tweed catchment.
“These patrols help us target areas where there is a greater risk of illegal fishing and act as a strong deterrent.
“As we move into the spawning season, salmon, sea trout and brown trout are particularly vulnerable, so our water bailiffs will be increasing patrols across the river and its tributaries.
“We would also encourage members of the public to report anything suspicious, as this information can be very helpful to our enforcement work.”
The River Tweed Commission has statutory responsibility for the protection of salmon and freshwater fish throughout the Tweed catchment and works closely with partner agencies to support effective fisheries enforcement.
