Organising a funeral for a loved one is never easy, but when you are already struggling with the cost of living, the expense of a funeral can be overwhelming. However, you might be entitled to a Funeral Support Payment.
Midlothian Financial Inclusion Network (MFIN) is encouraging local people to check whether they could receive Funeral Support Payment, a Scottish Government benefit that helps cover essential funeral costs after someone dies.
The payment can go to the applicant or straight to the Funeral Director, helping reduce financial stress at an already emotional time.
You may qualify if:
– You live in Scotland.
– You or your partner are responsible for paying for the funeral.
– You or your partner receive one of the following benefits: Universal Credit, Income Support, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Incomebased Jobseeker’s Allowance or Incomerelated Employment and Support Allowance.
– The person who has died lived in the UK, and the funeral will take place in the UK.
What does it help pay for?
– Burial, cremation or alkaline hydrolysis costs
– Official documents, such as the death certificate
– Transporting the person who has died, after the first 49.7 miles.
– Travel costs for the applicant attending the funeral.
It does not cover memorial services or separate ceremonies for scattering or burying
ashes.
How Much Could you get?
The payment amount varies depending on the situation and does not usually cover all costs. Most Scottish councils do not charge for burial or cremation of those under 17, meaning payments may be lower in those cases.
How to Apply
Applicants can apply up to six months after the date of death. Before applying, you’ll need:
– National Insurance number
– Funeral Director details
– Any receipts or bills
– Bank details
– A letter addressed to the person who died, dated within the last 12 months
Applications can be made:
– Online: Funeral Support Payment – mygov.scot
– By phone: Social Security Scotland on 0800 182 2222
– By post: Request a paper form via the phone number above
Only one Funeral Support Payment can be made per funeral.
Supporting Midlothian Families
MFIN encourages anyone who may be eligible to apply and to share this information with family, friends, and community members. Funeral costs can be a heavy burden, and this payment exists to ensure no one faces financial hardship while grieving.
