Residents looking for cost of living support, free activities or a welcoming place to connect with others can find help at every Midlothian library this autumn and winter.
Midlothian Council is highlighting the wide range of services available through its libraries, which are free to use and open to everyone.
Libraries offer much more than books. Residents can:
– Get information on cost of living support
– Use free computers, wifi and digital learning stations
– Join free activities and groups for children, young people and adults
– Borrow books, audiobooks, CDs and DVDs
– Borrow musical instruments
– Borrow tools and equipment through the Lend+Mend service

Residents can also access cost of living support through Citizens Advice’s digital touchscreens, which provide up-to-date information on support available from a range of organisations.
Known as VERA, the touchscreens have been used by residents over 10,000 times to access information since their installation last year.
The touchscreens available in Danderhall, Gorebridge, Lasswade, Loanhead and Penicuik libraries, with a portable unit also available on the Mobile Library.

Several libraries offer additional community support throughout the autumn and winter months.
Libraries in Danderhall, Lasswade, Loanhead and Newbattle have cafés serving hot and cold drinks and food. Library members receive 10% off purchases, and from September to June anyone can enjoy free soup and a hot drink.
Residents can also build their digital skills using new Digital Learning Stations available in most Midlothian libraries. The touchscreen stations provide a comfortable space to learn at your own pace, with access to a dedicated online resource featuring free courses, videos and guides on topics including staying connected with family and friends, shopping online, managing finances, accessing public services, applying for jobs and understanding new technologies such as artificial intelligence.
The Digital Learning Stations and online learning resources are designed to make digital learning easier to access, helping people develop confidence and skills in a way that suits them.
From October to June, free coat collections are available at Dalkeith, Loanhead and Penicuik libraries. Adults’ and children’s coats can be taken free of charge by anyone who needs one, and donations of good quality coats are welcome.
Councillor Kelly Parry, Midlothian Council Leader and Chair of the Cost of Living Taskforce, said:
“Our warm and welcoming Libraries sit at the heart of our communities and offer far more than many people realise. Alongside books and learning resources, they provide cost of living information, free activities, wifi access and practical support that can make a real difference to everyday life.
“Whether you’re looking for help with the cost of living, want to meet new people, need access to a computer, or would like to borrow something useful, your local library is there to help. I would encourage residents to explore what’s available this autumn and winter.”
