Refurbished leisure facilities at Wester Hailes High School have reopened, giving local residents increased access to sport, fitness and wellbeing activities.

The facilities, operated by Edinburgh Leisure, have been upgraded as part of the City of Edinburgh Council’s wider investment in the Wester Hailes community campus.

The improvements include a new fitness suite with 30 cardio and resistance workout stations, as well as a general-purpose studio offering an expanded programme of classes including Kettlecise, Pilates and Active Communities activities.

The swimming pool will continue to offer lane swimming, diving and family sessions, while daytime access to the gym and studio is also available.

Accessibility has also been improved, with modern changing facilities, step-free access throughout the venue, a Changing Places facility and a new pool pod to make it easier for people to enter the water.

The facility is now operating a seven-day programme aimed at increasing opportunities for people in the surrounding area to be active close to home.

David McGlade, Head of Operations (Schools) at Edinburgh Leisure, said the investment had created “brighter activity spaces, upgraded changing accommodation and a wider range of opportunities for people to be active close to home”.

He added that Edinburgh Leisure was particularly keen to expand its Active Communities programme, which aims to help people overcome barriers to being active.

Councillor James Dalgleish, Education, Children and Families Convener, said the centre would provide “more opportunities for the local community to be active and try new sports”.

The refurbishment forms part of a wider City of Edinburgh Council project to deliver a new Passivhaus-standard secondary school next to the existing site, which is due to open later this year.

The leisure facilities are open seven days a week, with details of opening times, classes and membership options available from Edinburgh Leisure.
