There has been a slight reduction in the number of Borderers claiming unemployment-related benefits, senior councillors will be informed next week.
An economic development report will be presented to members of Scottish Borders Council’s Executive Committee on Tuesday, September 8.
It reveals that in May the benefits claimant count was 1,925, a reduction from 1,955 in April.
This includes 390 young people aged 16-24 (up from 370 in April); 1,020 individuals aged 25-49 (down from 1,060 in April) and 520 people aged 50 and over (down from 525 in April).
The claimant count refers to the number of people in an area claiming unemployment-related benefits.
This includes individuals who are out of work and claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), or claiming Universal Credit (UC) and required to look for work as part of their claimant commitment.
Additionally, there were 3,839 individuals in employment on low incomes claiming Universal Credit.
