Edinburgh Council leader Jane Meagher has thanked residents, emergency services and community organisations for helping keep communities safe during Bonfire Night celebrations.

She said the evening was broadly peaceful across the city, although she expressed anger and disappointment over isolated incidents of disorder.

Councillor Meagher condemned those responsible for causing fear and alarm, particularly incidents involving emergency services, and said she hoped they would be caught and brought to justice.

She said she was pleased that most residents had been able to enjoy celebrations at community-led displays, while bus services continued to run as normal.

The council leader also praised council teams, Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Lothian Buses and community organisations for their work following months of planning and partnership working.

The council’s approach included prevention measures such as Firework Control Zones, engagement with young people and alternative activities, alongside organised events for families and communities.

Councillor Meagher added: “I’d like to reiterate my thanks to residents for acting responsibly, looking out for one another and helping to keep their neighbourhoods safe.”
