Kirsty McNeill MP and Richard Harris, owner of Rosslyn Inn

Kirsty McNeill MP and Midlothian businesses are calling on the Scottish Government to cut the business rates of Scottish pubs, clubs and live music venues.
The call comes after the Prime Minister announced a 20% reduction in business rates for eligible venues in England from April next year. Combined with existing support introduced earlier this year, the relief is expected to save the average business an additional £1,100 a year.
Kirsty McNeill MP said:
“Midlothian’s pubs and social clubs are vital community spaces that bring people together, help tackle social isolation and support local jobs. It is so important that they receive the support they need to remain at the heart of our communities.
“Venues in England are getting a 20% cut to their bills, but so far, the Scottish Government hasn’t committed to extending the same support to our local businesses.
“That’s why I’m joining forces with some of our brilliant local pubs and clubs in Midlothian to call on the Scottish Government to meet and match the support available in England.”
Richard Harris, owner of the Rosslyn Inn, who is backing this campaign, said:
“After the torrid time the industry has had, any breathing space would be very much welcome.
“A commitment to match the reduction in business rates announced in England would give us assurances beyond temporary relief and help us get through what has been an incredibly difficult period.
“I’m delighted to join Kirsty in calling for the discount given to English hospitality to be extended to Scottish operators.”
